CAREY BUTSAVAGE
Mr. Butsavage is the founder of Butsavage & Durkalski, P.C. and has been practicing law for three and a half decades. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from Denison University with honors in 1972, and graduated from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in 1976. After law school, he served as a staff counsel to National Labor Relations Board Member John Penello from 1976 to 1979. He left the government in 1979 and went into private practice in union-side labor law. Mr. Butsavage moved to Bethesda, Maryland in 1984, and has been a resident of Bethesda ever since. He is a member of the Ohio (inactive), Pennsylvania (inactive), District of Columbia and Maryland bars. He is admitted to the bar in the District Courts of Maryland, the District of Columbia and Middle District of Pennsylvania. He is also admitted to, and has argued cases before, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second, Third, Fourth and District of Columbia Circuits. He has an active practice in the areas of legislative and political affairs and represents unions and related groups in both the public and private sectors on a variety of issues, from arbitration to federal litigation.
Mr. Butsavage has published numerous articles and appeared on dozens of panels to discuss the areas of law in which he practices. He particularly enjoys speaking to non-lawyers about how they can empower themselves through the exercise of their legal rights.
JOHN DURKALSKI
John Durkalski provides general counsel legal services to unions, nonprofit organizations, and political action committees. He counsels local, national, and international unions, nonprofits, and political action committees on all aspects of their operations. This includes providing counsel to organizations regarding day-to-day matters such as labor and employment issues, incorporation, regulatory compliance, fundraising, and tax status matters. When necessary, John represents organizational and individual clients in actions in state and federal courts, administrative agencies and before arbitrators. He has extensive experience working with organizations on the legal and practical aspects of public campaigns such as the use of radio and print advertising, websites, social media, direct mail, email, flyers/leaflets, and policy briefs. He also maintains an active practice assisting organizations and public officials to draft legislation that advances the public good in a range of policy areas.
During law school, John worked as a law clerk to Senator Edward M. Kennedy in the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Labor Policy Office. Prior to law school, he was Program and Media Relations Coordinator for the ACLU of Ohio where he worked primarily on voting rights and national security issues, and spent time drafting newspaper opinion pieces and speeches, coordinating press conferences, lobbying public officials, and writing policy briefs.
John is a graduate of Oberlin College and The Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law. He is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and Maryland. In 2009, his article on flexible work policies was published in the Berkeley Journal of Employment and Labor Law.
BLAINE TAYLOR
Mr. Taylor began working at Butsavage & Durkalski as a law clerk in 2013 and is a graduate of the George Washington University Law School. During law school, Mr. Taylor was awarded the American Bar Association/Bureau of National Affairs Award, which is given to members of the graduating class who demonstrate excellence in the study of labor and employment law. Prior to joining Butsavage & Durkalski, he completed an externship with the District of Columbia Department of Employment Services where he gained significant exposure to the labor section of the D.C. Code and the employment benefits section of the D.C. Municipal Regulations.

Jordan Grandt is the Office Manager/Researcher of Butsavage & Durkalski. In addition to providing administrative support, Ms. Grandt conducts strategic research for the firm’s clients. She has been with the firm since 2018.
In 2018, Ms. Grandt graduated cum laude from The University of Georgia with a Bachelors in International Affairs and Political Science. During her academic career, she studied for a semester at the University of Oxford in England. She is also a member of Sigma Iota Rho, the honor society of international studies. Ms. Grandt is not an attorney and not licensed to practice law.
